Today our nieces Beth and Josie and their friend Riley have been visiting us with my sister from Virginia Beach. They wanted to “do” something on the farm before returning home so I suggested that they each plant an oak tree that we have sprouted in pots from last year’s acorn crop.
Now the great thing about children planting trees is they get to see it grown up whilst we get to see them grow up. At 14 and 11 the girls really understood that these trees would be “their” tree to visit in the future – they had altered for the better a tiny part of the world and this tree in Wales would hopefully be there throughout their lives and beyond. It becomes their legacy. Having planted and watered their trees they then labelled them with their names for us to add permanent signs in the future.
